gofmt is pretty heavily CPU-bound, since parsing and formatting 1MiB
of Go code takes much longer than reading that amount of bytes from
disk. However, parsing and manipulating a large Go source file is very
difficult to parallelize, so we continue to process each file in its
own goroutine.
A Go module may contain a large number of Go source files, so we need
to bound the amount of work in flight. However, because the
distribution of sizes for Go source files varies widely — from tiny
doc.go files containing a single package comment all the way up to
massive API wrappers generated by automated tools — the amount of
time, work, and memory overhead needed to process each file also
varies. To account for this variability, we limit the in-flight work
by bytes of input rather than by number of files. That allows us to
make progress on many small files while we wait for work on a handful
of large files to complete.
The gofmt tool has a well-defined output format on stdout, which was
previously deterministic. We keep it deterministic by printing the
results of each file in order, using a lazily-synchronized io.Writer
(loosly inspired by Haskell's IO monad). After a file has been
formatted in memory, we keep it in memory (again, limited by the
corresponding number of input bytes) until the output for all previous
files has been flushed. This adds a bit of latency compared to
emitting the output in nondeterministic order, but a little extra
latency seems worth the cost to preserve output stability.
This change is based on Daniel Martí's work in CL 284139, but using a
weighted semaphore and ephemeral goroutines instead of a worker pool
and batches. Benchmark results are similar, and I find the concurrency
in this approach a bit easier to reason about.
In the batching-based approach, the batch size allows us to "look
ahead" to find large files and start processing them early. To keep
the CPUs saturated and prevent stragglers, we would need to tune the
batch size to be about the same as the largest input files. If the
batch size is set too high, a large batch of small files could turn
into a straggler, but if the batch size is set too low, the largest
files in the data set won't be started early enough and we'll end up
with a large-file straggler.
One possible alternative would be to sort by file size instead of
batching: identify all of the files to be processed, sort from largest
to smallest, and then process the largest files first so that the
"tail" of processing covers the smallest files. However, that approach
would still fail to saturate available CPU when disk latency is high,
would require buffering an arbitrary amount of metadata in order to
sort by size, and (perhaps most importantly!) would not allow the
`gofmt` binary to preserve the same (deterministic) output order that
it has today.
In contrast, with a semaphore we can produce the same deterministic
output as ever using only one tuning parameter: the memory footprint,
expressed as a rough lower bound on the amount of RAM available per
thread. While we're below the memory limit, we can run arbitrarily
many disk operations arbitrarily far ahead, and process the results of
those operations whenever they become avaliable. Then it's up to the
kernel (not us) to schedule the disk operations for throughput and
latency, and it's up to the runtime (not us) to schedule the
goroutines so that they complete quickly.
In practice, even a modest assumption of a few megabytes per thread
seems to provide a nice speedup, and it should scale reasonably even
to machines with vastly different ratios of CPU to disk. (In practice,
I expect that most 'gofmt' invocations will work with files on at most
one physical disk, so the CPU:disk ratio should vary more-or-less
directly with the thread count, whereas the CPU:memory ratio is
more-or-less independent of thread count.)

If go.mod declares 1.17 or higher, when the go command rewrites go.mod
(for example, after 'go mod tidy'), it will be more consistent about
moving requirements in two blocks, one containing only direct
requirements, and one containing only indirect requirements.
The go command will not move requirements into or out of a block with
comments. It may still update versions and "// indirect" comments, and
it may delete unneeded requirements though.

Update vendored golang.org/x/tools repo to pick up CL 339250 for
assembly function check for register ABI.
This is done with

Update cmd/vet tests as the error ouput changes in CL 301949.

This change changes the requirement on golang.org/x/mod to require the
top of the dev.cmdgo branch of that repository. This allows the code
on this branch to use the changes on the branch on that repo for parsing
go.work files. It also vendors in those changes using go mod vendor.

It is unclear what the future holds for the go line in go.mod files.
Perhaps at some point we will switch to semver numbering.
Perhaps at some point we will allow specifying minor versions
or even betas and release candidates.
Those kinds of changes are difficult today because the go line
is parsed in dependency modules, meaning that older
versions of the Go toolchain need to understand newer go lines.
This CL makes that case - parsing a go line in a dependency's
go.mod file - a bit more lax about how to find the version.
It allows a leading v and any trailing non-digit-prefixed string
after the MAJOR.MINOR section.
There are no concrete plans to make use of any of these changes,
but if in the future we want to make them, having a few Go releases
under out belt that will accept the syntax in dependencies will
make any changes significantly easier.

This change upgrades the vendored pprof to pick up the fix for a
serious issue that made the source view in browser mode blank
(tracked upstream as google/pprof#621).
I also had to patch pprof.go, since one of the upstream commit we
included introduced a breaking change in the file interface (the Base
method is now called ObjAddr and has a different signature).
I've manually verified that the upgrade fixes the aforementioned
issues with the source view.

Since x/tools is now lazy, this removes a significant fraction of
otherwise-irrelevant dependencies from the go.sum file.
The remaining extraneous go.sum lines come from the dependency on
github.com/google/pprof. Since that module is outside of the Go
project proper, I do not plan to submit a PR to make it lazy until
after the Go 1.17 release.

Because x/crypto is now lazy, this removes the remaining checksums for
older-than-selected dependencies from src/go.sum.
It also removes a significant fraction of the irrelevant checksums
from src/cmd/go.sum.

Even though x/mod is now lazy, this has no immediate effect on the
size of cmd/go.sum: all of the existing dependencies are still pulled
in via the dependency on x/tools, which is itself not yet lazy (that's

Even though x/term is now lazy, this has no overall effect (yet) on
the contents of cmd/go.sum, because the dependency that would be
pruned out (an old version of x/sys) is still transitively required
through x/crypto, x/sys, and/or x/tools.
Once those modules are also lazy (CL 316109, CL 316111, and CL 315570
respectively), the extra go.sum entries for x/sys will drop out.

Because x/arch is now lazy, this removes the checksum for rsc.io/pdf
from the go.sum file: the requirements of rsc.io/pdf are known not to
be relevant to any package imported within the cmd packages.

This change activates the dormant “lazy loading” codepaths added in CL
265777 and its predecessors. Dependencies of modules that declare 'go
1.17' or higher are loaded lazily, and the dependencies in the go.mod
file maintain additional invariants to support more efficient lazy
loading for downstream dependent modules.

The cmd/pprof package currently uses golang.org/x/crypto/ssh/terminal
which - as of CL 258003 - is merely a wrapper around golang.org/x/term.
Thus, drop the dependency on golang.org/x/crypto/ssh/terminal and use
golang.org/x/term directly.

After CL 179377, this change deletes all the prior cmd/cover code
and instead vendors and type aliases code using the significantly
optimized golang.org/x/tools/cover, which sped up ParseProfiles by
manually parsing profiles instead of a regex. The speed up was:
name old time/op new time/op delta
ParseLine-12 2.43µs ± 2% 0.05µs ± 8% -97.98% (p=0.000 n=10+9)
name old speed new speed delta
ParseLine-12 42.5MB/s ± 2% 2103.2MB/s ± 7% +4853.14% (p=0.000 n=10+9)
